What does success mean to you?

When it comes to the vision we have for our lives and businesses, a lot of people have vague ideas of what that will look like. The word “successful” and the quote “she designed a life she loved” are used a lot, but too many don’t delve into what that looks like or how it will feel. What does success mean to you? What defines a life you would love?

You'll be asked the core question – “what does success mean to you?” on two occasions … they are: when you’re working with a coach (like me) and when you’re writing a vision statement for your business plan. But could you answer it? Success to me is getting more money, but also about what the money is for. Success is having the option to work less – I’m not there yet, but I do think about how that will feel.

What does success mean?

Here’s the Dictionary.com definition of success:

  • The favourable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavours; the accomplishment of one’s goals.
  • The attainment of wealth, position, honours, or the like.

But would you call yourself ‘successful’ because you achieved a goal or attained wealth? To most of us, success is more meaningful than that. It’s about what that allows us to do and how it makes us feel. It involves being specific and purposeful with our goals which add up to the big picture. It’s never losing sight of the reason you’re striving for it. It’s about it being your motivation to keep going even when things are difficult or scary.

If you want to be a ‘success story’, if you want to get interviewed and be described as ‘successful’ or if you want to coach others on ‘how to be successful’ … then you NEED to be really clear on it yourself first. We’re not defined by others calling us successful. We don’t need anyone to tell us we are or what that looks like. It’s down to us.

Is success important? The word isn’t, but how we define that for ourselves is.

She knew the power of her mind and so she programmed it for success

You’ll find a lot of guides online about the power habits of successful people – each one sharing the same types of productivity tips and stereotypical perceptions of a corporate business man/woman (success stuck in the past). Now you get to redefine that. You get to make it your own.

How do you know if you're successful?
