How to Set Goals and Get to Where You Want to Be
How often have you set goals only to give up when it means having to step out of your comfort zone? Or maybe you're too busy and you'll work on it next month but then this becomes an excuse you use again and again? It’s really easy to overlook the importance of a plan of action or to create a huge 'to do' list that actually doesn't get you any closer to where you want to be. But if you work with me or you're a part of my Facebook group, you'll know that I will encourage you to carry out purposeful actions that move your business forward. How to set goals that move you forward
What is the goal and why is it important?
You've got goals. Good. But do you know why you set each of those for yourself? What will achieving that do for your business and for your life as a whole? How will it look when you've achieved it? What will it feel like? How do you know you've done it? Whether you use SMART or CLEAR goals, take some time to decide what success means to you and exactly what you need to do to reach your ultimate vision. Write it down - whether it's in a statement at the top of your business plan or in the journal you write in daily... keep it where you can be reminded of what it is you’re setting out to achieve. If someone picked up your plan, would they know where you want to be, why it's important to you AND how you're going to get there?
What do you have to do?
Is your 'to do' list full? Do you feel overwhelmed by how much you have to do? It's time to actually see whether these tasks are vital to achieving your goals. So here's a question for you to remember every time you go to add something else for you to work on... "By doing this, will it bring me closer to my ultimate vision?" If the answer is no or even maybe, then it should go. And if you really can't let go of it, then outsource it because it doesn't directly need you to do it.
Who should hold you accountable? YOU.
Whilst working with a coach (like me) will encourage you to show up and GSD, they can only push you so far. Ultimately, you're the one who needs to put in the work. Whether you're hiring a £2,000 or £20,000 coach, they're there to give you clarity and keep you on track - both in your mindset and actions, but you get out of it what you put in. You feel such a bigger sense of achievement when you've held yourself accountable to setting effective goals and moving yourself to where you want to be.
And how can you achieve these goals?
Get up early and take Hal Elrod (author of The Miracle Morning)'s advice...
Find 6 activities to do for 10 minutes each, every single morning. Exercise, read, write, repeat affirmations, meditate, listen to a podcast – anything that helps you to prepare for and feel positive about the day ahead.
Don't fear 'fear' or failing...
Fear is a good thing. It means you're doing something that involves stepping out of your comfort zone. You're leaping forward and you're working on your goals. Go back to your vision journal if you need to, to remember why you're doing this. And if it doesn't work out? So what! You've learnt what didn't work and are a step closer to finding what does.
Even if you don't hire a coach, learn some techniques...
Identify the problem you have >> the ideal outcome you want to achieve >> the blocks in you/others/the situation >> then brainstorm ways to move forward.
Do some self-reflection. You can even take the 16personalities test. This will help you to identify your strengths and weaknesses... and be okay with those.
Lacking motivation? Then spend time doing something that does motivate you before you return to what you need to do.
You CAN do it and you ARE good enough.
