If you’re not getting clients, it’s likely because of one key thing: you’re not visible. You’re not putting yourself out there, you’re not going live, your potential clients aren’t having increased opportunities to see you on social media. Did you know that it takes 7 touch points for them to buy from you? This is why you need to increase business visibility - so you can build trust with each interaction. But let’s be clear… you do not need to pay for PR in order to do this.

How to do your own PR

(You might like to read: How to be your own PR machine)

We all want to be seen as relevant, honest, exciting and interesting within our industries - a ‘thought leader’, ‘influencer’ or ‘expert’ perhaps. For many companies, that’s where PR comes in… getting you media coverage to increase business visibility, without paying for digital or traditional advertising. Here’s the thing: you can do your own PR. By choosing the right places, finding the right people, pitching yourself in the right way, demonstrating your knowledge/skills/experience, you WILL increase business visibility and build brand awareness.

“In PR we often talk about Input-Output-Outcome. Input is the work you are putting in, such as a press release - output is the immediate effect, such as media coverage – outcome should be the longer term change you hope to bring about via your efforts, such as an increase in customers who found out about you online. Being clear about what you want and how you intend to measure it will help you set more realistic goals and align the appropriate amount of effort to the task” - Forbes

DIY PR: How to get an article published

Ladies, here’s how you can try it starting TODAY! >> Contact a magazine, newspaper or blog that you want to be in. Start by finding the name of the Features Editor (online or in the first few pages of the magazine) and write to them. Introduce yourself, tell them your credentials (show them where possible, with examples of content you’ve published) and then pitch your idea(s). Add “what do you think?” to it to encourage a response, but don’t be afraid of them saying no to your idea at this time. This is about building relationships where you want to be featured… you might then be asked for a quote or to write at a later date, just because you’ve introduced yourself. Using this saw me featured by the likes of the BBC, Huffington Post and many more -- it’ll do the same for you too!

Things to think about:

Who would you like to be featured by?

What can you talk about? What topics are coming up?

Are there other types of features you can write?

If writing isn't your thing, what other media could you use?
