How to stay focused
Staying focused and on track at work can seem an impossible task.
No matter how hard you try, the inevitable pull of social media and the ‘things to do’ list is sometimes too hard to resist.
Each week, I coach clients that have lost their way, lost focus and can’t seem to seem to find a happy and productive work balance because they are pulled in different directions, I get it, it’s tough!
With a study revealing that 89% of employees admitting to wasting time at work every day, these simple hacks will help you build good business-savvy habits to enable you to set clear goals towards staying focused at work.
Here are my top tips:
TIP #1: ORGANISE YOUR WEEK
Some straightforward organisation the week before can save precious time and help you start each working day with a clear mind. Schedule and time block your routine, be ruthless and stick to it!
TIP #2: SETUP A SYSTEM
Having a system of organisation will give you a clear and consistent idea of the projects you have going on. Make a daily to do list, prioritising tasks and making a note of any objectives you have for that day. It will help you know what’s most important and what needs your attention first.
TIP #3: CLEAR YOUR WORKSPACE
Clean and clear your office space before leaving work. A clear working environment is proven to aid concentration and means you are less likely to be distracted by clutter.
TIP #4: FOCUS ON ONE THING AT A TIME
Focus on getting one project finished before switching to the next. People usually think that they’re getting more done by multitasking, but, going back and forth from task to task isn’t beneficial. In fact, trying to perform two tasks simultaneously can actually take a toll on productivity and slow you down, the American Psychological Association reveals.
TIP #5: START SAYING NO
Sometimes that little word is the hardest to say. But it’s OK to say it. It’s important to manage people’s expectations – both at home and at work! So if you can’t take something on and give it 100 per cent, then don’t do it at all. You’ll be surprised how good and empowering it feels!
TIP #6: GOOD NIGHT-TIME HABITS ARE KEY
A restful and reinvigorating night sleep is key to staying alert during the day. Say no to social media for at least 30 mins before you go to bed, or even better ban it from the bedroom entirely. Do it, it’s liberating!
TIP #7: START WITH EXERCISE
Research published by the Harvard business review found regular exercise to be intrinsically linked to improved concentration and prolonged mental stamina, both of which are essential for a productive and focused day at work. By giving your brain a rest from the day job, I believe, makes it hyper-sensitive and alert to any new project coming your way.
TIP #8: TRY MEDITATION
Trust me on this, it’s not woo-woo I promise…but make time for meditation! Take a couple minutes when you wake up, wind down or just have clouded thoughts to clear your mind, breathe and…meditate. There’s some great apps around to help you re-focus. My personal favourite is insighttimer.com
TIP #9: SWITCH OFF TO SWITCH ON
Whilst it’s not always possible, move mobiles away from your desk space so you’re not tempted by a quick Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, or Twitter fix! It’s so tempting I know but if you want to be productive, remove and put out of sight!
TIP #10: TRY THE POMODORO METHOD
Developed in the 1980s, this time-sensitive technique works for some where they need to get a specific task complete within a certain time frame. There’s a handy website that sets the timer for you https://tomato-timer.com/ enabling you to really zone in and get a project done in 25 minutes. Ready, steady, go!
I hope these tips work for you and I’d love to hear how you get on!
